When players start playing Texas Holdem Poker, other variants such as Omaha call their attention more and more. Omaha is in fact a Holdem variant very similar to Texas except that instead of two individual poker cards, each player gets four. In order to play his hand the poker player is forced to use his two cards and combine them with the five cards on the table. Just like in Texas, in Omaha the game is very intuitive and players can start playing it quickly after learning the rules due to their simplicity.
Omaha Hi Poker (also known as Omaha High) is one of the most popular poker versions in the world and there are two types of this interesting version of poker: Limit Omaha Hi and Pot Limit Omaha.
The Omaha Hi version in which the highest hand takes the pot is the most played version, although the Hi-Lo mode in which the highest hand takes half of the jackpot and the lowest hand takes the other half is more popular in the United States. The Hi-Lo version is usually played in the no limit mode while the normal version is played with limit (Pot Limit Omaha).
Omaha poker rules are based on Poker Texas Holdem, with some differences, for example:
- Players get four cards and have to use two and only two cards in their hand and three and only three cards on the table to make their hand. The maximum number of players per table is 10.
- Betting rounds are the same as in Texas Holdem:
-Preflop: the player on the left starts with the big blind.
- Flop, Turn and River: the small blind starts, or instead, the player closer to its left who is still in the round.
We have to take into account that one of the characteristics of Poker Omaha is that it’s a nuts game. In most hands someone will have the maximum hand, so we shouldn’t play unless we have a good hand.
The overestimation of pairs is the main problem Texas Holdem players have to face when they move to Omaha. It’s very important to take into account that we have to play with four cards that are linked.
